Actually, I am referring to what are more properly known as \u201cfalse cognates\u201d \u2013 words that appear or sound similar in two different languages but actually mean something different.\u00a0 Actually, \u201cactually\u201d is one of those!<\/p>\n
The list of false cognates between Spanish and English is long.\u00a0 I\u2019ll give a few examples:<\/p>\n
The Spanish actual <\/em>and its adverb form actualmente <\/em>are equivalent to the English current<\/em> and currently<\/em> respectively.\u00a0 In English, actual <\/em>and actually <\/em>mean real\/true <\/em>and really\/truly.\u00a0 <\/em>If you say to an English speaker, \u201cJoe Biden is the actual president of the United States,\u201d it sounds as if someone else is pretending to be the president, while Biden is the real<\/em> president.<\/p>\n If a man says he is embarazado<\/em>, he will probably end up being embarrassed.\u00a0 He just told everyone he was pregnant.<\/p>\n If you study English or Spanish long enough, you will realize that realizar<\/em> doesn\u2019t mean to realize<\/em> in the sense of \u201ccome to an awareness of.\u201d\u00a0 <\/em>It means \u201cto do\u201d or \u201cmake reality,\u201d as in \u201cto realize one\u2019s dreams.\u201d\u00a0 I eventually realized that the way to say \u201crealized\u201d in the sense that I have used it in this sentence is \u201cMe d\u00ed cuenta.\u201d<\/p>\n These are just a few of the many examples of false friends that exist between English and Spanish.\u00a0 You just can\u2019t trust them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" You can\u2019t trust them.\u00a0 They deceive you so easily.\u00a0 I\u2019m talking about false friends!\u00a0 They may look like friends, but they\u2019re not!
