There is a set of similar expressions that can cause problems for students of English: used to; to be used to; to get used to\u2026.\u00a0 The first one, \u201cused to,\u201d is used quite differently from the other two, which are related.\u00a0 I think of them this way:<\/p>\n

1. used to + simple verb<\/strong>: expresses an action the subject did regularly or repeatedly in the past but does not do anymore<\/p>\n

Example:\u00a0 I used to smoke (but now I don\u2019t).<\/p>\n

He used to read a lot, but now he doesn\u2019t have time.<\/p>\n

  1. to be used to + noun\/pronoun or verb-ing<\/strong>: to be accustomed to; to be adapted to<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Example:\u00a0 I am used to cold weather.<\/p>\n

    She is used to living in warm climates.<\/p>\n

    He doesn\u2019t like his job, but he\u2019s used to it.<\/p>\n

    1. to get used to + noun\/pronoun or verb-ing<\/strong>: to be in the process of adapting or becoming accustomed to<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Example:\u00a0 Winter in Chicago is hard, but I am getting used to it.<\/p>\n

      I don\u2019t like healthy food, but I\u2019m getting used to eating it.<\/p>\n

      He cannot get used to getting up at 5 AM every day.\u00a0 It\u2019s too difficult for him.<\/p>\n

      During her five years in the army, she got used to running great distances.<\/p>\n

      You can speak of getting accustomed to something you did regularly in the past but which you no longer do:<\/p>\n

      Example:\u00a0 I used to live in Alaska.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t like the cold, but I got used to living there.<\/p>\n

      He used to hate vegetables.\u00a0 He still does, but he has gotten used to them.<\/p>\n
