Fun vs. Funny

Two words which are mixed up by almost all students studying English as a second language are fun and funny.

Fun is usually a noun.  It means enjoyment or amusement.

For example:  The children were having fun in the play area yesterday.

Having fun is doing something you like to do.

Examples:  I like to swim.  I think swimming is fun!

I enjoy spending time with my sister.  We always have fun when we are together!

We went to dinner and a movie.  It was so much fun!

Funny is an adjective.  When something causes you to laugh, we say it is funny or humorous.  Movies which are listed as comedies are funny.  the purpose of a comedy is to make you laugh.

Examples:  A comedian told a very funny joke.  Everyone in the audience was laughing!  He is so funny!

Cartoons are funny!  Bugs Bunny makes me laugh.  Bugs Bunny is very funny!

I hope you had fun learning the difference between fun and funny!
